Maindy Flyers are proud to celebrate the news that the Tour of Britain will finish in Cardiff this year, marking a fitting tribute to Geraint Thomas, one of the greatest British cyclists of all time and a proud product of our very own club.
The decision to bring the race to Cardiff for its grand finale is a nod to Geraint’s remarkable achievements in professional cycling and his incredible journey from the Maindy track to the top of the sport. From his early days as a Maindy Flyer, through Olympic gold medals, and ultimately to winning the Tour de France in 2018, Geraint has inspired countless young riders here in Wales and across the world.
This year is extra special for Maindy Flyers as we celebrate our 30th anniversary—three decades of nurturing young talent, building confidence, and helping riders dream big. To have the Tour of Britain return to Cardiff in the same year we mark this milestone, and in honour of one of our most iconic alumni, feels like the perfect celebration of everything the club stands for.
As Geraint announces his retirement from professional racing, it is only fitting that the roads of Cardiff—and the fans who’ve followed his career from the beginning—will get to celebrate his final lap in style.

His journey from the Maindy velodrome to yellow jersey glory is a story that continues to inspire our riders every single week,” said Mike Richards from Maindy Flyers. “To see the Tour of Britain return to Cardiff in his honour is incredibly special—not just for G, but for the whole Welsh cycling community.”
The Flyers family couldn’t be prouder. Geraint’s legacy is not just measured in victories, jerseys, and podiums, but in the belief he’s instilled in young riders: that world-class talent can come from humble beginnings on a local track.
We hope to see our Flyers lining the streets of Cardiff in September, waving flags, cheering loudly, and soaking up the atmosphere as the Tour of Britain honours a true Welsh sporting hero.
