This weekend was a truly special moment for Maindy Flyers, as we joined thousands of fans in celebrating Geraint Thomas’s farewell to the peloton at his final Tour of Britain.
On Saturday at the Tumble, many riders set off early from Maindy velodrome for the 75 mile round trip to line the famous climb to cheer G on one of his favourite training roads. The atmosphere was electric, with young Flyers waving flags and shouting encouragement as he battled up the slopes that have shaped so much of his career. For many of our riders, seeing a such a famous ex-Maindy Flyer on an iconic Welsh climb was both inspiring and emotional.
Then came Sunday in Cardiff, where the streets of the capital turned into a sea of Welsh flags and smiling faces. The Flyers firstly did a 2 hour training session at Maindy track, then rode in a 150 rider peloton the short distance from Maindy velodrome to and through the finish line of the Tour of Britain. The crowds cheering and banging the boards as the riders crossed the line will be something never to be forgotten. Following this, a chosen and lucky 12 riders were able to join G as he road his bike through the gates of Cardiff castle where the Flyers then had front row seats as G said his final farewell to thousands of cheering fans.
From his beginnings with the Flyers to Tour de France glory and Olympic gold, Geraint has shown what’s possible with talent, dedication, and hard work. His story will continue to inspire generations of young cyclists at Maindy.
On behalf of everyone at the club: thank you, Geraint, for the memories, the inspiration, and the example you’ve set. We’re proud to have shared the road with you. Pob lwc for whatever comes next!
