Summer Quarter 2008

This quarter saw a close run battle between our chairman and vice chairman for this coveted award. Alan Haycox staked an early claim when he locked off his own easy gears then went for a hilly 20 mile ride, stopping at the bike shop half way to ask what was wrong with his bike!

Graham Barker however made a late and successful bid for the title when his bike broke in Tywyn. At first his right STI stopped working, leaving him only one gear on the back. On the ride he was able to use his front changer, but only by unclipping and kicking the mech when he wanted to go back into the small chainring. On return to the campsite trying to pinpoint the exact fault with the rear gears became difficult as we realised every moving part in the transmission was seized. Closer inspection also revealed the brakes were also suffering with "orange wire" syndrome. The right hand STI was finally proclaimed dead by the local bike shop and the search is now on for a replacement. In the meantime his bike has been confiscated to prevent him trying to put it back together himself.

Graham is however learning a painful lesson as he is currently riding his daughters cyclo cross bike with under 14 gears and is taking a right kicking on the rides from both his daughters.

Spring Quarter 2008

The head coach has decided the inaugural award should go to Paul Hinchley. His mechanical prowess is legendary but possibly his display during March was the best yet. Every week on Tuesday and Thursday, he turned up with some part of his Peugeot racing bike in bits. Under the guise of “learning” a number of other parents helped repair his stricken machine. Only after 4 consecutive weeks, with the bike fully functioning, gleaming, and a new groupset fitted; as he rode away did it dawn on the other parents he had just had the best free service available!!

Personally I think they should have cottoned on as soon as he said when his bike was repaired he would be able to keep up with Amy, clearly this was untrue and this would have aroused my suspicion.
