Saturday 11th November saw the annual Maindy Flyers Annual General Meeting, awards party and mini league presentation.

At the AGM the new committee were eager to be elected and get on with organising the new season. The new web-site supremo made a plea for new items. Alan promised this and telling the story of the Tywyn time trial would be the last (much to the relief of Graham Barker).

Following intense debate and heated opinions the young members of Maindy Flyers were reluctantly persuaded to end the AGM and go to a pool party instead. Clearly not as attractive as the discussion regarding insurance cover while using Maindy track, but they recognised the adults had gone to some trouble to lay on the party so they had better show some gratitude and attend. (Perhaps this group will enjoy my tracks and churches tour next year more than the team of 2004).

However the youngsters put on a brave face and gave every appearance of enjoying their time in the pool. Such a brave face it gave some difficulty getting them out. “We want to give you prizes now” had no effect. “Does anyone want something to eat?” Still no effect. Andrew is next to the buffet – fortunately the lifeguard suffered only minor injuries in the stampede.

So on to the presentation. First a surprise as Ian Jenkins from Welsh Cycling had come along with medals from the Welsh Circuit Race Championships held in Tywyn earlier in the year.

There were a number of medallists from Maindy Flyers and their friends who had ridden in the mini league and on the night Ian was able to give Gold medals to Harry Lock, Emily Haycox, Robbie Westwood and Elinor Barker. There were Silvers for Josh and Amy Hinchley, Nathan and Jack Llewellyn, and Peter Merridew. Ian also had a Bronze for Geraint Manley.

He then moved on to a plethora of track medals for Manon Morgans from the Welsh Track Championships. This kept her quiet for nearly 22 seconds, a new PB!

Finally it was the main event, the mini league presentation. The full results are already on the website and all the category winners were there, Geraint Manley, Jack Llewellyn, Rhys Thomas, Harry Lock and Josh Hinchley for the boys. For the girls Elinor Barker, Megan Barker, Lowri Thomas, and Rachel Strange took the honours. There was no under 12 girls champion this year, which was just as well. If a certain young lady in Australia should read this – can we have our trophy back??

The final trophy of the night is awarded for overall performance and was presented to Geraint Manley in recognition of his performance throughout the league. His attacking and aggressive riding tested his opponents to the full, he came out the strongest, a worthy winner and an example to his fellow competitors.

The evening was rounded off by a firework display from a group of MF parents. A cross between display and gunnery exhibition resulted in an exciting end to the evening, for the whole neighbourhood!!
